ABOUT THE WORK

M. Benjamin Herndon's silverpoint and graphite paintings are fundamentally concerned with light and disruption. Under flexible conditions, and with a combination of intentional interruption and entropy, the geometric patterns in Herndon's work evolve organically. In the end, this subtle chaos references patterns in the natural world. The role light plays in his work similarly references those most conspicuous daily markers of natural change: dawn and dusk. The paintings often at first seem to be minimalistic and blankly dark until they are illuminated, at which point hopeful, glimmering records of labor appear.
